Patricia A. Holmes’ new children’s book pleads: ‘Tell somebody!’
LAFAYETTE, La. (PRWEB) September 05, 2014 -- For more than two decades, author and associate professor Patricia A. Holmes taught undergraduate and graduate intercultural international communication courses. When a student privately told Holmes she was molested as a child by a Catholic priest, inspiration struck Holmes and the concept of a book began to take shape.
Holmes’ new book, “Tell Somebody, Just Tell Somebody” (published by AuthorHouse), gently brings the topic of sexual abuse to children between the ages of 5 and 10 while empowering parents with knowledge, should their child be abused.
“Tell Somebody, Just Tell Somebody” explains sexual abuse in a format children can easily understand. The phrase “tell somebody” is repeated often to emphasize to children how important it is to tell a loved and trusted adult about abuse.
Holmes also includes a note to parents at the end of the book, reminding them that while abusers can be strangers, they are often people their children know. She advises parents to set aside a special time to read the book to their children and review the terms and concepts within. Holmes also outlines a strategy parents can teach their children should they ever find themselves victims of an abuser.
“The fact that sexual abuse occurs more often with people children know is documented and studies also show that children don’t tell,” Holmes writes. “This book will empower children to know the signs and find the courage and their voice to tell someone.”
