Author Paul “Monty” Choy’s father was born in Canton, China while his mother was born in Malaya. His father was very autocratic and conservative and did not share with his family, his own family history. His mother also remained silent on her own family history. The author and the rest of his siblings were all left in the dark and this prompted him to share his story with his own children and the publication of his book.
“The Flying Dragon” tells author Paul “Monty” Choy’s story as a Chinese boy who was born and lived in Malaysia during the forties through the sixties. Growing up when Malaya was still at war with the Japanese, he was brought up under very strict Chinese parental control. When he attended an English school, he had to strike a balance between his Chinese upbringing and Western ideas gleaned from a Western education.
Choy succeeded in his aspiration to fly by becoming a pilot in the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF). As a flying support mission, he faced a counter insurgency war against communist terrorists, fly dangerous mission along the Thai/Malaysian border as well as during the Indonesian confrontation along Kalimantan, Sarawak and Sabah border. Risking their lives, they braved the elements, the terrain and harassment from the Indonesians even if some of them have died in pursuit of their mission.
Intermingled with episodes of happiness, fascination, sadness, frustration, and resignation, author Paul “Monty” Choy’s life story in “The Flying Dragon” will appeal to aviation buffs as it also provide readers with some humour, retrospect and a sense of nostalgia for those who might have lived or been through Malaysia during that tumultuous period in history.
