The new canine case study documents in detail how the PetPace collar lowered the need for post-operative manipulation in a dog following open chest surgery, while still enabling caregivers to accurately and closely monitor vital signs and other key physiological data.
The patient, a five-month-old female Husky puppy named Kira, was presented to the Herzeliya Veterinary Hospital in Israel owing to repeated regurgitations and weight loss. Following an extensive work-up she was diagnosed with a rare vascular anomaly called PRAA.
PRAA, short for Persistent Right Aortic Arch, is a congenital anomaly involving the large blood vessels around the heart. The anatomically abnormal structures cause constriction of the esophagus and prevent solid food from passing into the stomach. PRAA requires corrective surgery to remove the constriction from the esophagus and to allow normal feeding.
Kira was hospitalized to stabilize her condition before surgery, which turned out to be lengthy and complex. A PetPace collar was placed on Kira towards the end of the surgery to help monitor her closely during the difficult post-op period. As can be seen in the chart below, the PetPace collar’s pulse readings closely matched the readings from the anesthesia monitor.
In the following days, vital signs charts from the PetPace collar were displayed in real time on a monitor placed in a central location in the hospital, and played a crucial role in the close supervision that Kira required. Kira’s vitals were mostly within normal limits, as can be seen in the following charts.
Use of the PetPace collar on Kira augmented traditional direct patient assessment by caregivers, enabling them to fill in data gaps between manual measurements. Moreover, since PetPace data is obtained automatically and without human intervention, it better reflected Kira’s true condition.
Using the PetPace collar for non-invasive, intensive medical monitoring provides real-time streaming health data on the patient, helping caregivers continuously assess the clinical condition. Additionally, the PetPace collar reduces the handling and stress associated with frequent manual measurements.
