Author Phil Bryson looks back at his life and misadventures in his new memoir “The Wrong Path” (published by AuthorHouse). “It is about a voyage of discontent, voyage of resistance and exposes the navy’s underbelly,” Bryson says. “It was the biggest mistake of my life.”
With his decision to join the Royal Navy in 1966, Bryson inadvertently began an Alice-in-Wonderland journey that would end with him sitting in prison. His initial reason to join the navy – to see the world – quickly became the motto of his life as he adventured through the known world as a fugitive.
Readers will follow as he becomes bored with the life of a military man and opts to desert for a grander adventure. One day during his travels, he is lured back to England for Christmas. “The Wrong Path” looks back at Bryson’s life in the navy, his adventures through Europe and the United States, prison and life aboard an aircraft carrier. As he says:
“I returned to the UK for Christmas, was caught and sent back to the navy where I talked my way out of 28 days into 42 days in naval prison. Upon release I was sent back to the aircraft carrier and had to see the captain of the ship and I told him that I’d desert again. In the end I wrecked a helicopter and was court martialed and got sentenced to one year in naval prison. Eventually I was thrown out of the navy.”
