U.S. consumer advocacy and customer complaints website, Pissed Consumer, determined and released statistics on the industries consumers research and file complaints about the most. This data is based on website page view statistics and consumer reports filed during 2013.
"We evaluated 21 categories and 100 subcategories featured on our website to see which industries dominated consumer interest throughout the year," said Joanna Simpson of PissedConsumer.com. "By releasing this information, our hope is that consumers will be able to conduct well-timed research and make purchasing decisions that leave them more satisfied."
The five most-researched industry subcategories in 2013, along with their percentage of annual page views, were:
- Furniture and Decor (10.71%)
- Auto (9.62%)
- Loans and Mortgages (5.83%)
- Auto Financing (5.56%)
- Cosmetics and Toiletries (4.03%)
"While all consumer reviews have value, recent reviews and complaints can be the most important," said Simpson. "Those are the reviews directly related to a company's current situation, from local management changes to feedback on new policies affecting customers. Because of this, we broke down the data to show which subcategories received the most consumer complaints or reviews each month."
In May of last year, for example, the following industries received more consumer complaints than any others:
- Health and Beauty
- Auto/ Service Centers and Customer Service
This information might benefit buyers by influencing the timing of purchases. Furniture companies, for example, receive the most complaints or reviews in January, July, and August. Because of that, a consumer might choose to schedule his purchase after one of those months when more timely consumer information is available.
