Greg Coleman Law Reviews Impact of Boehringer Ingelheim’s Attempt to Settle Pradaxa Litigation for $650 Million
Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) May 31, 2014 -- Greg Coleman Law, a Tennessee defective drug litigation law firm, continues to express concerns about the proposed Pradaxa litigation settlement announced by Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH on May 28, 2014. The firm continues to review and investigate claims that the blood thinner Pradaxa caused severe injuries and deaths.
Pradaxa, a blood thinning medication intended to replace drugs such as Warfarin, has been on the market since 2010 according to a May 28, 2014 Bloomberg Report. The report also indicates that since the drug’s 2010 FDA approval, the drug has been linked to bleeding complications and fatalities.
If successful, Boehringer’s proposed $650 million settlement offer to 4,000+ U.S. claimants would end all pending claims surrounding the Pradaxa litigation. Most U.S. claims against the German drugmaker would be dropped if the settlement offer is accepted.
In the statement released by the pharmaceutical company on May 28, 2014, Andreas Neumann, Head of the Legal Department and General Counsel at Boehringer, affirmed that the company believed the drug to be safe. The company took pains to ensure that the settlement offer would not be interpreted as an admission of guilt. “We continue to stand resolutely behind Pradaxa…,” stated Neumann.
As reported by Bloomberg, in December of 2013, Boehringer received a fine nearing $1 million for failing to provide documents related to clinical trials that revealed Pradaxa’s role in excessive bleeding incidents in 22 cases. The drugmaker’s settlement offer is timely because of the uncertainty of U.S. jury awards.
