R.H. Morrison’s New Novel Catches the Emotions of Growing Up
LINDSAY, Ontario (PRWEB) August 14, 2013 -- Poet E.E. Cummings once said, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” The strength and determination of one boy’s experience growing up illustrate cummings’ words in “Guys: Growing Up” (published by iUniverse), the new book by R.H. Morrison that TV and film actor Howard Swinson describes as “a compelling tale of young men journeying from boyhood to manhood.”
Morrison’s book is set in Canada 1944, just as World War II is starting to draw to a close. Fifteen-year-old Scotty just needs one more year, one single year, and he can leave. With an alcoholic father and the stifling atmosphere of his hometown, Scotty feels trapped and desperate to escape, but he still has a lot of growing up to do. With the help of his four best friends, Scotty must learn to navigate the adult world of jobs, unions and relationships while breaking free of the relentless grip of the past.
Scotty’s struggle with his past exemplifies Morrison’s message of the human spirit overcoming a rough environment. “What a guy becomes is dependent on his ability and attitude,” states Morrison. “What his attitude depends upon is his environment which is cultivated by the expertise or lack-there-of, of his caregivers. Environment can be overcome with awareness and effort. Scotty exemplifies that.”
Morrison hopes readers will take away “a feeling of warmth and familiarity as well as possibly a better understanding of the human dynamic.”
