Hawaii’s Rich History and Aloha Spirit Shared in New Historical Book
KAMUELA, Hawaii (PRWEB) August 08, 2013 -- Hawaii is “the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean,” according to Mark Twain who lived and worked there as a young, budding writer and journalist. Later on in life, Twain expressed a desire to write a novel about Hawaii which never came into fruition. First-time author R. K. Lindsey Jr. shares a similar and even greater passion for Hawaii, but unlike Twain, he has successfully published a book that tells of the rich and glorious history of the land which Captain James Cook stumbled upon and once called “The Sandwich Islands.” Lindsey’s new book is titled: Latitude 20.04°N Longitude 155.71°W.
Lindsey was largely inspired by his lifetime of service to “peace and goodwill amongst men” and being an advocate for aloha (love) within people, communities and society. All these fueled his desire to publish a book that approaches the dilemma Hawaiians are facing in a more objective and optimistic light. His new book takes into account the bitter truth that their sovereign nation was stolen from them over a hundred years ago. However, he heralds the way to a brighter future free from bitterness and resentment, and brimming with the spirit and Hawaiian value called aloha.

Latitude 20.04°N 155.71°W is Lindsey’s legacy and advocacy for his own people. It revisits Hawaiian history told through short stories through the lives of fictionalized characters—everyday folks living ordinary lives doing extraordinary things at times. It follows the lives of John Ikaika Lindsey and Holly Birch. John is kanaka (native Hawaiian), and Holly Birch is a 12-year-old girl from Mystic, Conn. who touches John’s heart and opens him up to a whole new world via a magic candleholder—a world of love, fulfillment, and aloha in the summer of his life. When time and distance finally separate them, it seems there is little hope for reuniting.

About the Author
R. K. Lindsey Jr. was born on April 24, 1948, in Hilo, Hawaii and was raised in Waimea on the island of Hawaii, the biggest Hawaiian island. He studied at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (1970) and also holds certificates in Executive Management from UH Manoa’s School of Business. He is married to Kathy Ann Dunn, a veteran elementary school teacher. They have three sons: Maluhia (Mana Christian Ohana staffer), Lono (firefighter) and Imiola (electrical engineer). Lindsey is currently a trustee with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. His interests include gardening, writing and community service, serving on 15 non-profit boards.
