R.K. Raj Discusses Poverty and Environment Through New Novel
Delhi, India (PRWEB) October 01, 2013 -- The rag-pickers of the slums in Delhi are the kidneys of the city. From the trash, they pick scraps, some to eat and others to be turned in to a wealthy investor who will recycle the material into something useful. For this, they are paid very little if anything at all. Author R.K. Raj encountered one of these rag-pickers one night while traveling through New Delhi. The image inspired his new novel, “Kidney” (published by AuthorHouse).
“The book presents a holistic view of social problems of deeply rooted disparity in the society in general and Indian society in particular,” says Raj. “It’s an inspiration how a poorest of the poor gets educated against all the odds throughout his entire life.”
“Kidney” tells the story of Inder Jeet, a rag-picker who is chosen to attend an international conference in Canada on health and the environment because of an outstanding essay he wrote. The conference earns Inder a job opportunity with Hwaib, the Asia head of Planet Health Organization, which may raise him out of poverty. Inder works under Ishwar Jain and his daughter, Bhumi, to improve the recycling programs and bring light to the plight of the rag-pickers. As Inder encounters opposition from Ishwar’s traditionalist wife and rich businessman, Kul Vilas, he will have to find the courage and strength to rise up against Indian society and bring change to the lowest of the low.
The kidney metaphor highlights the many struggles of the poor and calls for understanding and change between the classes. Raj says, “’Kidney’ draws impressive parallel of rich and poor, presents glaring examples of cooperation, contradiction, socialization, victimization from various stereotypes of Indian society.”
