Daughter pieces together present through researching father’s past in new memoir, ‘Collateral Damage’
BRADENTON, Fla. (PRWEB) September 11, 2017 -- Four-year-old Reda Reynolds lived with her parents and little sister on the Upper West Side of Manhattan shortly after Hitler invaded Poland. Reynolds’s father, a refugee from Hitler’s Germany, was drafted in 1944. In January of 1945, they received the news he was killed during the Battle of the Bulge. The trauma compounded when, two years later, her mother re-married and eradicated all traces of Reynolds’ father and his family.
In “Collateral Damage: A World War II Orphan: Lost and Found” (published by Archway Publishing), Reynolds discusses how, in her 50s, she sought to fill an emotional void by learning more about her father and his mission in World War II.
In the memoir, Reynolds recalls researching government documents and obtaining a copy of her grandfather’s memoir, which offered her insights into life in Germany from the enactment of the Nuremberg Laws, his imprisonment in Buchenwald and his release from the concentration camp. It was the knowledge she needed to help her make sense of her past and present.
“I would like readers to learn that it is possible to recover from early childhood loss,” Reynolds explains. “It is important to me that readers realize the importance discussing difficult life situations, with children, in language they can understand. It is never right to pretend that something bad didn't happen.”
