New Chronicle of the American Revolutionary War Delivers an Uncommon History Surrounding Independence Day
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) July 03, 2013 -- Author and historian Kenneth Samcoe offers a fresh and clever look at a poignant part of American history in ‘Revolution! An Uncommon Chronicle of the American War for Independence.’ Written in present tense as a series of newspaper articles and interviews, ‘Revolution!’ is also the story of a civil conflict fought in a divided country where the words “liberty” and “independence” are equally cheered, cursed, and ignored.
Samcoe had originally attempted to write a different novel about American history but was struck with writer’s block. He found the inspiration for ‘Revolution!’ as he was getting ready to file the notes for the book he was unable to write. He explains, “I looked at the notes again and began to see the beginning of a chronicle. I remembered friends who had read portions of the unfinished novel wishing aloud that they knew more about our revolution than what they came away with from school, and I decided to attempt a short history of our revolution for them and others like them.”
The American Revolutionary War is well-documented but perhaps not as well-known as it could be. For all those who wished they had learned more about the war, Samcoe put together a common history in an uncommon manner. He formed the facts and stories into articles and reports, so that it would read like a daily newspaper with updates of the war. It contains illustrations and interviews with major and minor players, and a short afterward describing what happened to them after the war.
In ‘Revolution!,’ the various reports and interviews are dated and in chronological order to make it easier for the reader to follow the trail of the war. The war is described as it may have been reported and read while it was happening, similarly to how it was done for wars that followed.
Factual battle descriptions are interspersed with background information, to fill the reader in on the political climate of the times. Several narratives describe the battles, and other reports shed light on the history of several people who were integral during the revolutionary period. The fictional character, Mr. Anonymous, is included in interview-style “conversations” as a source of background and commentary. His observations help fill in certain voids and answer questions the reader might have after reading a report.
The remarks of historical figures were gleaned from their writings or their biographers. In his selected bibliography, Samcoe acknowledges other historians, authors, and editors who have written extensively about the revolutionary period. He says, “the authors and editors of these well-worn books on my shelves have educated and enlightened me for many years. I owe them much and I hope my efforts in writing this book will somehow honor theirs.”
The easy-to-read and familiar format of ‘Revolution!’ will appeal to readers who wished they had learned more about the American war for independence. This book can also be helpful for students of American history, young and old, as a supplemental textbook of the revolutionary period.
