‘Saving the Donner Party’ Presents New, Updated Account of Rescue Efforts
Fair Oaks, CA (PRWEB) August 29, 2014 -- In November 1846, a group of American pioneers headed west from Illinois were trapped in a massive snowstorm in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. Known as the Donner Party, the group’s ill-fated journey is one of U.S. history’s most well-known survivor stories.
In his new book, “Saving the Donner Party: And Forlorn Hope” (published by Archway Publishing), author Richard F. Kaufman draws on 20 years of research to tell the story of the brave men who risked their lives to save the 81 men, women and children of the Donner Party.
There were a total of eight rescue attempts, each with its own characteristic experience. Kaufman compiles a record of historical documents and letters from Sutter's Fort State Park and the California State Library to give an in-depth, updated account of these rescue efforts and the men who led them.
Kaufman’s account focuses on the massive effort and expenditure of resources by the rescue parties and how the Mexican War going on at the time impacted them. Using historical weather statistics and tree ring technology, the book presents a more thorough understanding of the so-called "storm of the century" that enveloped the Donner Party and offers new information about exact locations and travel routes.
“Hopefully, this book will close nagging questions about the Donner Party that have prevailed over the years,” Kaufman says, “and update those earlier writings whose published inconsistencies were thought to be true at the time.”
