International Property Rights Conference Invites Manhattan Condemnation Attorney Michael Rikon, CRE to Speak in The Netherlands
(PRWEB) July 13, 2016 -- The Owners’ Counsel of America is pleased to announce that Manhattan-based condemnation attorney Michael Rikon, CRE has been invited to speak at the 13th Annual Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Conference at The Peace Palace in The Hague, The Netherlands. Mr. Rikon, a partner at Goldstein, Rikon, Rikon & Houghton, P.C. and the New York member of Owners’ Counsel of America, will participate on a panel exploring the property rights decisions of international courts.
“International agreements have broad implications for property ownership and trade,” explained Rikon. “In treaties and other international agreements, property is not limited to real property and tangible commodities but includes intellectual rights and any other right which has value.”
“The recent Brexit referendum approved by British voters will present an interesting situation relating to international property rights, specifically intellectual property rights, in the coming years,” Rikon stated. “It is anticipated that intellectual property rights proceedings originating in the U.K. against E.U. defendants will need to be litigated in both U.K. and E.U. courts.”
The Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Conference is sponsored by the William & Mary Law School Property Rights Project. W&M’s Property Rights Project promotes the exchange of ideas between scholars and practicing attorneys through lectures, a journal, and the annual conference, which is renowned for its outstanding program featuring members of the bench, bar, and academia. Each year, the Property Rights Project recognizes the outstanding contributions of a single individual to the field of property rights scholarship and awards the Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Prize. The 2016 Prize will be awarded to Peruvian economist Hernando de Soto, President of the Institute of Liberty and Democracy (ILD).
“It is a privilege to be invited to participate in this international property rights conference in The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice and home to two of the international courts in which property rights claims are litigated,” said Rikon. “I expect the conference will include many dynamic discussions and look forward to engaging with scholars and lawyers from around the world.”
