Author’s new autobiography details struggle with mental illness, ‘Learning How to Fly’
SCITUATE, R.I. (PRWEB) January 29, 2015 -- Ruth L. Midsummer knows all too well of the stigma and trauma that comes with mental illness. She witnessed three generations of her family struggle with mental illness, watching as they faced discrimination while attempting to overcome their unique challenges. Furthermore, she’s now part of her family’s fourth generation to have a mental illness.
Midsummer tells the emotional story of her family and their history of mental illness in her new autobiography “Learning How to Fly” (published by Trafford Publishing).
“Mental illness is an issue that is commonly addressed by the media and is often portrayed in a negative light,” Midsummer says. “I want to help the reader to better understand mental illness so as to facilitate the removal of its stigma.”
“Learning How to Fly” chronicles Midsummer’s struggles with mental illness, while looking back at the history of her family members and their individual struggles. During their day-to-day lives, Midsummer says she realized her family faced countless challenges all while battling the social stigma that surrounds mental illness.
Midsummer is confident her book will not only resonate with readers who have experience with mental illness, but also bring those unaffected by mental illness a better understanding of the diagnosis as a whole.
