Mother Recalls Battle for Her Daughter’s Education in New Memoir
DETROIT (PRWEB) August 02, 2013 -- In her new memoir “Problem Child Single Parent” (published by Trafford Publishing), Sandra M. Brassell delivers a raw, gritty look at her battle to find a place for her daughter – who is a special needs student – in public school.
Brassell’s daughter suffers from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as well as bipolar disorder. As Brassell says, her daughter was denied an education due, in part, to her mental disorders. However Brassell also feels strongly that she and her daughter encountered resistance and difficulty when dealing with school officials because of racial discrimination.
An excerpt from “Problem Child Single Parent”:
“It isn’t always as simple to care for a child with a mental problem, because it doesn’t matter how much you want your child to be normal, you are always reminded that it is never that simple. I tried to protect my daughter under the law, but discrimination always seems to plays a significant part of her life. Normal people have a tendency to discriminate because they don’t understand. I wanted my daughter to be a functioning Special Needs Child but knowing she is black—does make a difference because of stereotyping. I really wasn’t able to make much difference. When she first started Junior High School that was where her problems started.”
As she chronicles her battle with school officials, Brassell often refers back to a universal motivation for struggling for her daughter’s rights. “We must make sure our children are receiving a quality education and it doesn’t matter if the child has a disability or not,” she says.
Delivering both a politically and personally prompted message, “Problem Child Single Parent” takes readers into the heart of Brassell’s lonely fight for her daughter’s future.
