SchoolMessenger Celebrates National Charter Schools Week with Announcement of Community Engagement Grant Awards
(PRWEB) May 04, 2015 -- SchoolMessenger, the leading provider of K-12 communication solutions and a subsidiary of West Corporation, today celebrated the opening of National Charter Schools Week by announcing the recipients of its Community Engagement Grant program. The grant program was created to help charter schools improve parent and community engagement.
SchoolMessenger named Littleton Preparatory Charter School of Littleton, Colorado and The Sugar Creek Charter School of Charlotte, North Carolina as the recipients of grants for 2015. The organizations will each receive a free custom mobile app solution from SchoolMessenger, allowing them to have a central mobile location for key academic and parent information.
“Now, more than ever, parents are turning to mobile devices and apps to stay connected to their students’ schools,” said Robert Iskander, general manager at SchoolMessenger. “With this grant program, we are helping charter schools discover new ways to reach busy, on-the-go parents.”
Mr. Iskander noted that the rise of mobile technologies has changed the communication habits of parents in every socioeconomic group. According to Pew Research Center, 64% of all adults own smartphones, including half of all low income adults. “Statistics tell us that almost two thirds of charter school students come from low income families, and those families tend to be dependent on smartphones for access to the internet and other forms of communication,” Mr. Iskander said. “Our grant program is designed to help charter schools reach all of their parents by using mobile technology.”
Schools that partner with SchoolMessenger for a mobile app are able to completely customize it to meet the needs of parents, staff and students. Any content that the school leaders feel is important, from teacher pages to staff directories to lunch menus, can easily be added.
“We have wonderful parents, but we believe that we are missing a huge opportunity to communicate with them via a mobile app,” said Lisa Lira, director of operations at Littleton Preparatory Charter School. “This grant will give us the best chance at building a future that unifies our school community.”
