People in the wake of trauma will often think that a fulfilling life, totally free from the pain of their traumatic past, is impossible. Scoba Rhodes has experienced the life-changing and debilitating effects of personal trauma. He is familiar with the suffering that comes after traumatic experiences and yet he also knows that complete healing is within reach. Rules of Engagement: A Self-Help Guide for Those Overcoming Major Personal Trauma, his new book, is a personal testimony of resilience and faith and an inspiring guide for those who want to recover and embrace life after tragedy with renewed vigor.
In 2008, Rhodes found out that he had abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The diagnosis was only the beginning of a series of events that would ultimately change the way he looked at life. In 2009, he underwent surgery for his condition. He thought the procedure would last only six hours but he ended up waking up 11 days later, barely able to breathe and unable to move his legs. He was shocked at his condition and, before long, found himself spiraling into fear, depression and helplessness. He recalls, “I could say I experienced every negative emotion available over the next six months. I did not receive any comfort or counseling from a hospital counselor or social worker. I laid there in my own tears for two months then went to rehab.”
Rules of Engagement will prove to be an invaluable book for those who want to overcome personal physical trauma or a similar life-changing event. More than a practical self-help guide, it is a source of inspiration and hope for people going through tough circumstances. Rhodes shares, “This book is for others like me who could use some initial assistance in getting a hold of a major trauma and how to cope with the next few months/years... If you need specific steps and actions you can do now while you are in the hospital, then this book is for you.”
Rhodes, the honest, witty and compelling narrator, guides readers through his own personal recovery process, underscoring the “10 Rules of Engagement” which he learned along the way. In the undercurrents of this work is the monumentally significant message that a fulfilling life is still within reach even after a traumatic experience.
