The rent money from the investment condo goes right back into my IRA like a monthly contribution plus I have the equity of the investment. I’ve tripled my 401k and now have peace of mind.

Orange County-based entrepreneur and self-directed IRA financial expert Kaaren Hall has devoted her career to an alternative saving strategy. “It’s not well known, but rental properties, secured notes, gold and even startups can be funded through a Self-directed IRA, and have a dramatic impact on retirees’ quality of life,” says Hall.

One of the firm’s earliest clients, Joe L. Mendez, had been a GlaxoSmithKline sales consultant for 20 years. In 2008 he was forced to retire at age 50, a casualty of mass layoffs at the company. On top of that his 401k lost $150,000 in value, and it kept losing ground. “I discovered self-directed IRAs,” Mendez said, “but every financial planner I spoke with was negative about it. Apparently they earn their fees from stock market investments. Finally, I took control of my 401K. I had a new career in real estate and bought an investment condo in 2010. I understood the market and could see it was the right decision. The rent from the investment condo goes right back into my IRA like a monthly contribution. Plus I have the equity of the investment. I’ve tripled my 401k and now I don’t have to worry.”

Her firm, uDirect IRA services, facilitates the underused self- directed IRA (SDIRA) practice. So far only about 4% of US investors have SDIRAs, and Hall brings her full passion to spreading the word at hundreds of educational events. “I constantly hear from investors seeking more diversification, and they’re surprised to learn they can purchase alternative assets with their 401K and IRA funds.”

Hall founded and made a resounding success of uDirect IRA in the midst of the recession and mortgage market collapse. The single mom found a strategic way to put her 20+ years in mortgage banking, real estate and property management to use. The SDIRA solution was an untapped market for both her skills and for investors.

According to real estate strategist David Campbell of Hassle-Free Cashflow Investing, “When the stock market is extremely volatile, my phone rings. Callers want to buy real things like a rental house or invest in mortgage notes.” He agrees, and discovered uDirect four years ago as an “awesome” solution for his personal IRA.
