Shofner Vision Center Sponsors the Second Annual Songwriting and Soldiers Retreat Event to Help the S.A.F.E. Organization
Nashville, TN (PRWEB) September 19, 2014 -- Shofner Vision Center supports an array of not-for-profit organizations, which are of special interest to renowned eye surgeon, Dr. Stewart Shofner. Most recently Dr. Shofner wrapped up another successful “Operation Military June," which was created to provide significant funds and public awareness for not-for-profit organizations that help both active duty and retired military personnel and their families.
Dr. Shofner is very excited to sponsor the second annual Songwriting and Soldiers Retreat, which focuses on the healing powers of songwriting to help service members and their families address issues, including post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), created by long overseas deployments in a dangerous environment.
Many servicemen and women with PTSD or other issues do not want to share their war experiences. However, expressing one’s story through music may promote healing. “We supported last year’s retreat and we were very touched by the emotional content of the songs," says Dr. Shofner.
"The songwriting process was very successful in helping both servicemen and women and also their families continue the process of coping with issues created by their military service,” says Dr. Shofner. We are proud to sponsor this year’s retreat and hope other companies and individuals will also embrace this unique method of helping the military and their families who have sacrificed so much on our behalf.
About the Retreat
A local not-for-profit, Soldiers And Families Embraced (SAFE) is organizing the Songwriting and Soldiers Retreat titled "Singing Their Stories." At the retreat, professional songwriters will help participants tell their stories in a song. No musical ability is necessary and there is no charge to participate.
The retreat will be held September 19th through 21st and take place at the beautiful Scarritt-Bennett Center and is for any soldier or family member who could benefit from the experience. A concert will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 7:00 pm in Clarksville, TN at Austin Peay State University. The concert is an opportunity to share the songs written with family members and friends.
SAFE Organization
Soldiers And Families Embraced (SAFE) offers free, confidential counseling for anyone connected to military. No insurance is necessary. They operate solely on private donations and private grants. Clients do not pay for their services. Potential clients who call the offices are asked to come into SAFE offices for an intake interview and most see a counselor within one to two weeks. SAFE helps clients as young as four years old. SAFE is located at 510 College St., Clarksville, TN 37040 and serves both active duty and retired military personnel and their families in Middle Tennessee.
About Shofner Vision Center
Dr. Shofner's father was a highly decorated Marine General who participated in more combat than any Marine officer in WWII. He also led the one of the few successful escape from a Japanese prisoner of war camp. Dr. Kevin Johnson is active in the US Air Force Reserves. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force F-16 "Top Eye" program, and participated in the Air Force evaluation of PRK/LASIK for Air Force Academy Cadets and Pilots. Both Dr. Shofner and Dr. Johnson are extremely committed to giving back to our Servicemen and Servicewomen and their families who sacrifice so much for our country.
Services for Military
Shofner Vision Center offers special LASIK programs for Wounded Warriors providing free LASIK for any Serviceman or Servicewoman who has trouble with glasses or contacts because of a lost limb while in combat. Dr. Shofner also offers very affordable vision correction surgery prices for Veterans, Reservists, and Active Duty Serviceman and Servicewomen and their families.

SAFE: Soldiers And Families Embraced offers individual and group counseling services, as well as peer support groups for active duty, veterans and their families. These services are provided at no cost, and no insurance is required. SAFE is a non-profit organization funded through grants and private donations.
