Sinuwave Photodisinfection Abstract Presented at the American Rhinologic Society Conference
(PRWEB) October 07, 2013 -- Sinuwave Technologies Corporation announces that its Sinuwave Photodisinfection System was the subject of an abstract that was presented at the 59th Annual Meeting of the American Rhinologic Society held September 28, 2013 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The abstract, entitled “Sinuwave Photodisinfection for the treatment of refractory chronic rhinosinusitis: a case series,” was submitted by researchers from the University of Montreal (Centre de Recherche du Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CRCHUM), Montreal, Canada). Sinuwave Photodisinfection System is Health Canada approved and was developed by Ondine Biomedical Inc. of Vancouver, the global leader in Photodisinfection, also known as antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT).
Dr. Martin Desrosiers and his research team at the University of Montreal are the first clinicians to deploy the Sinuwave Photodisinfection system on patients with refractory chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), a very challenging patient population. In this case series, 9 refractory CRS patients were treated involving 29 sinuses (13 frontal, 6 ethmoid, 10 maxillary, 0 sphenoid). Refractory CRS patients are those who are unresponsive to medicinal therapies and (several) endoscopic sinus surgeries. There are 500,000 refractory CRS patients in the US, representing a large clinically unmet need.
The CRCHUM Abstract concluded that patients with Refractory Chronic Rhinosinusitis can be safely treated with Photodisinfection therapy using the Sinuwave™ Photodisinfection System under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Short term follow up in these patients has shown no delayed complications and importantly, demonstrated resolution of disease in several patients.
About Photodisinfection
Photodisinfection is a topical, non-antibiotic antimicrobial therapy that destroys a broad range of pathogens and their virulence factors, leading to a clinically observable anti-inflammatory effect. Photodisinfection is a minimally invasive non-thermal therapy involving the light activation of a photosensitizer to eliminate topical infections in a highly targeted approach. Photodisinfection has been proven to be safe and effective in other applications such as for the dental and hospital acquired infection prevention markets.
