“For all teachers or students who mention their school, Smokin’ Pit BBQ will donate 10 percent of their bill to their particular school,” said Nico. “Almost all the high school and middle schools in the district are involved.”

The “Give Back to Your School” program was initiated by Violet Banach of Smokin’ Pit BBQ who went from school to school, meeting with the principals and heads of the various PTAs. In addition to the “Give Back to Your School” initiative, the restaurant is also participating in a children’s recognition program, “Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports” (PBIS), which rewards good behavior. Emphasis of PBIS is given to the impact of implementing it on the social, emotional and academic outcomes for students with disabilities.

“Smokin’ Pit BBQ has created cookie coupons for the kids in the PBIS program,” said Violet. “The schools in the area involved in the PBIS program give out our cookie coupons to the kids that receive recognition.”

Smokin’ Pit BBQ has also instituted “Restaurant Days” on every Tuesday wherein a different school gets to have a “Restaurant Day” when they raise money for one project within the school, and Smokin’ Pit donates 10 percent of the total sales of that day. “We sponsor these programs as an incentive for the community to band together, as people here love their town and we are proud to be a part of it,” said Nico.
