Out Magazine Exclusively Premieres New Photos and Remix for "The Way We Were" by Rapper and Singer Solomon

Heavily inspired by art and technology, his new photos are the most colorful images the already colorful genre-bending artist has done. Inspired by Star Trek and 1960’s sci-fi films, the black and white look showcases the rapper with slicked back hair in Burberry Prorsum and Prada.
The pop art look, obviously inspired by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, was finalized when he saw Michael Jackson’s iconic Time Magazine cover. "Michael was and still is a huge inspiration for me," explains the artist. "So when my artistic collaborator came to me with the magazine, I loved the idea and had to go with it!"
While Solomon has a team of young artist he is now working with, he leads the creativity and is the first to present ideas. "I have this Michael Baastrup Chang photo in my home I absolutely love. So I wanted to incorporate televisions." The photo, an art installation titled The Vitruvian Woman by the Danish painter and printmaker, showcases an empty room with nine televisions. "I grew up in front of a television. So it’s like my perception of reality, and maybe beauty is a little skewed. Television killed reality." The look shows Solomon in Maison Martin Margiela, Givenchy and Reebok.
Having just filmed the music video for "The Way We Were", the artist is focused on media consumption and ways his fans can interact and hear his new music. "I want you to not only listen to this remix, but also view it." And when it comes to his upcoming debut album Why Boys Cry the singer shares this, "I hate how fast society consumes media. It takes me weeks to craft a song, just for you to enjoy it for a measly three minutes." Solomon is busy trying to figure out news ways and formats to introduce his debut album.
And with his fan base growing bigger, yet younger, Solomon is also aware of his influence. "My fans are getting younger. Like 12 and 14 younger. They’re always asking me beauty secrets and I just tell them - Photoshop!" The singer candidly jokes. "I’m more cautious of the things I say on Twitter and when I speak to them. The term role model scares me, but I can’t be ignorant to the fact that some of them look up to me for advice and possibly more. So it’s important I share with them what they are seeing isn’t real. It’s makeup and good lighting. I still have acne and bad hair days."
Solomon realizes how important his main goal as an openly gay entertainer is. "Now more than ever I realize how much of an impact it is to be an entertainer and also being gay. I want kids who are gay to know they can do whatever they want in life, and being gay won’t hinder that. I want them to know there is happiness and peace after high school."
The singer continues, "If Ricky Martin was open about his sexuality when I was growing up, that would have been such a cosign for me. Such a cool thing. Even with Elton John, I looked up to him so much, so it was this silent affirmation I would tell myself as a child that I can be myself, write my songs and share them. So now, because I know that and felt that, I would be doing such a disservice to myself and kids growing up to not be an open book. It’s not just about being honest with yourself, it’s knowing it’s okay to love yourself too."
Solomon’s new single, "The Way We Were" is currently available worldwide on iTunes and all major music retailers. His debut album Why Boys Cry will be released in in stores January 2014.
