Stacia G. Girard, Former Nursing Home Employee, Offers Help in Choosing Nursing Home in New Book
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) February 20, 2014 -- According to a poll done by The Microsoft Network, as of 2013, 3.3 million Americans were living in nursing homes. Author and former nursing home employee Stacia G. Girard spent many years caring for her mother in a nursing home. During Girard’s time there she realized what qualities make for a good caregiver. In her new book, “Caution: Nursing Home Ahead” (published by iUniverse), Girard chronicles her journey beside her mother in a nursing home, and what she learned along the way.
Girard’s mother was in a nursing home for 17 years. Since Girard worked nursing homes before her mother was in one, she saw things at the home from both sides of the spectrum. In “Caution: Nursing Home Ahead,” Girard tells about her mother’s time as a resident of the nursing home, paying close attention to their comfort, care, and needs.
Girard hopes her story, along with information such as caregiver rights will help prevent future cases of mistreatment in nursing homes, and allow readers to make informed decisions on choosing nursing homes.
An excerpt from “Caution: Nursing Home Ahead”:
“The day she died she was very quiet. I turned her to one side and prompted her with pillows for comfort, and later I turned her on the other side. I talked to her, and she would answer me with yes, no, or okay. Sometimes I held her hand. I fed her lunch and she ate it, to my great surprise. I was just as surprised she ate her dinner as well. For a person who was not eating all week, this day she was eating very well. This often is one sign a person is getting ready for a long journey, but I was not thinking.”
