A woman searching for her father’s family embarks on a haunting journey to unlock the mysteries of the past. M. Sophie Schneider’s new novel, “Standing on One Leg” (published by Archway Publishing) is a compelling story that weaves the past and present together in a seamless effort to find truth in a family legacy of lies.
Sophie, the story’s protagonist and narrator, reflects on her childhood during a conversation with her sister, Kat, which raises more questions than answers about their father and his checkered past. Determined to uncover the truth, Sophie hires a genealogist to research her father’s family but with little to go on, not even a name that is real, it is a long shot. Sophie struggles to remember snapshots of conversations she overheard as a child hiding beneath her mother’s table. She finds a clue in the form of a slip of paper found in an old book, a name written in red ink. As she digs deeper, into the past, she slowly pieces together information that could reveal her father’s true identity. But other secrets locked behind the silence of her mother’s family begin to surface as well.
An excerpt from “Standing on One Leg”:
“It wasn’t until the day my mother died that the search for my father’s family began in earnest. Up until then she had forbidden it. She wiped one red, chapped hand over the other and said, ‘What’s done is done.’”
