Nayla Khan marks her debut in the world of literature with the release of “Strange Tales: A Girl Like Her and a Crocodile” (published by Xlibris UK). Peopled by a cast of richly drawn characters, this new novel offers a riveting reflection on the essence of love, identity, religion, morality and culture in the age of the internet.

“Strange Tales: A Girl Like Her and a Crocodile” follows the experiences of Laila and Samir, two people from seemingly opposite backgrounds who meet in the unlikeliest of places: an internet dating website. Samir was a spiritual South African Muslim who appeared to want to break free with the limitations of his religion and society. Laila on the other hand was a Pakistani Muslim on a quest for a good time without complications.

Khan, the evocative narrator, tells the story of her characters through a series of anecdotes, painting them as people on a journey toward self-discovery and love. The character of Laila, according to her, is based on a real-life person.

“I met a person like Laila who had these unique life experiences,” Khan says, “Talking to her was fascinating; she had such an interesting life and was undeterred by misfortunes.”
