T-System Announces New Patent Filed for ICD-10-CM Technology for ER Documentation
Dallas (PRWEB) February 05, 2014 -- T-System Inc. today announced a new patent application filing for an ICD-10-CM feedback feature included with the spring software release of EV™, an emergency department information system (EDIS).
The patent-pending technology involves an automated, multi-level feedback system that helps clinicians document accurately for ICD-10-CM without any interruption in workflow. Clinical content consistent with ICD-10-CM terminology and structure has been built into the system. Color coding, optimized for color-blindness, and symbols alert clinicians to insufficient documentation that can result in less specific ICD-10-CM codes, and a feedback viewer specifies which areas of documentation are incomplete. Once documentation is completed by the clinician, an ICD-10-CM code is produced by the system.
“We strove to develop a more optimal solution to enable ICD-10-CM-ready documentation,” said Mark Pilarski, vice president of solution management at T-System. “Relying on the clinician to select the right code or the coder to do all of the work post-documentation is likely to lead to less specific codes which may result in claim delays or outright rejections. We spent over a year building specific ICD-10 clinical content with intelligent feedback and code generation into our system in a way that no other EHR has done.”
T-System clinically reviewed approximately 68,000 codes and incorporated the ones pertinent to the emergency department (ED). ICD-10-CM jargon was translated into a language more well-suited for emergency care while maintaining the familiar documentation convention of T-System’s circles and backslashes.
“We built the ICD-10-ready software with intensive feedback and input from ED physicians and coding experts," said Robert Hitchcock, M.D., FACEP and chief medical informatics officer at T-System. “We have a deep understanding of emergency care. Our goal was to go beyond ICD-10 compliance; we reduced the burden of an ED needing intensive clinical re-training, while protecting physician documentation efficiency and reimbursement.”
The T-System patent titled, “Systems and Methods for Coding Data from a Medical Encounter,” application number 14170437, was filed in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Jan. 31, 2014.
