While many people around the world watched the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, 12-year-old Katie Hillson harbored Olympic dreams. Katie’s aspirations were shattered, though, when she suffered a sudden, life-changing skiing injury the same day she qualified for the Junior Olympic Festival.

In “Katie and Me: Triumph over Tragedy” (published by Balboa Press), author Taji Warren Hillson, Katie’s mother, tells the story of how her daughter dealt with the injury that took away her dreams. Hillson describes how she and her daughter confronted the psychological and emotional struggles in the aftermath of the crash and subsequent surgeries. The author also addresses the transformations that both she and her daughter experienced. While Taji turned to writing, Katie recorded over forty piano pieces, including three compositions.

“The main message is that sometimes things happen in life that we may believe we aren’t equipped to handle, and yet we have extraordinary strength and perseverance that we don’t often tap into until we are faced with something life changing,” Hillson says.
