We continue to focus on our mission to educate and develop principled leaders for all walks of life so needed in the world today.

The Citadel is celebrating a US News & World Report quinquennial. The 2016 version of one of the most respected college ranking services was released at midnight on Sept. 9, naming The Citadel the US News & World Report No. 1 Public College in the South for the fifth consecutive year (offering up to a master’s degree). That’s a quinquennial.

What does that mean? When deciding where a student should attend college, many families turn to the US News & World Report Best Colleges Rankings. What The Citadel’s quinquennial means is that US News & World Report, one of the world’s leading providers of news and information, recognizes the quality and the value of a Citadel education, year after year. There are many college rankings on the internet, but US News & World Report was one of the originators. “We do it to help you make one of the most important decisions of your life,” according to a statement on the service’s website.

The report also ranks The Citadel as:

  • #3 Best College for Veterans in the South. (NEW)
  • #22 Undergraduate Engineering Program at schools without a doctoral program

The college's past U.S. News and World Report rankings include:

No. 1 Public College in the South (offering up to a master’s degree)
2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012

Top 5 ranking as “Best Value” Among Public Colleges in the South in The Citadel’s category

Top 25 position for Undergraduate Engineering Program at schools without a doctoral program in The Citadel’s category
2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012

“I am very proud of our cadets, students, faculty, staff, alumni and donors who contributed to this recognition,” said The Citadel President, Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. “We continue to focus on our mission to educate and develop principled leaders for all walks of life so needed in the world today.”

US News & World Report uses a complex methodology that includes data reported by more than 600 colleges and universities that the institutions must submit to maintain accreditations and funding. Some of the indicators used include:

Peer assessment
Retention and graduation of students
Student to faculty ratio
Student selectivity
Faculty resources
Alumni giving
