The overwhelmingly clear principle I have observed in thousands of organizations over the years, is that there is no substitute for talented people.

In a follow-up to her recent article “Recruiting Top Talent: 5 Keys to Getting the Right People on the Bus,” Kay Linder, who leads the healthcare technology and innovation practice at executive search firm ThinkingAhead, is advising organizations on how to overcome an even bigger challenge: hanging onto their best and brightest team members.

The new article, which is available on LinkedIn Pulse and entitled “Retaining Top Talent: 3 Keys to Keeping the Right People on the Bus,” highlights three areas that Linder says play a key role when it comes to increasing retention and reducing turnover: employee growth, teamwork and culture, and openness and honesty.

With respect to employee growth, organizations achieve this goal when their top talent feels that their boss is also a mentor, when they have multiple professional development opportunities, and when they can play a role in shaping budgets and strategic plans.

With respect to teamwork and culture, organizations need to inspire their most important, stabilizing and profitable employees to perceive the environment as supportive, welcoming and safe. While hard work is typically the norm since talented performers are also over-achievers, laughter and fun must also be part of the mix.

With respect to openness and honesty, talented employees know they can leave anytime and get a job elsewhere. Instead of denying this truth, smart organizations transparently embrace it to make top employees feel needed – and therefore deepen the relationship.

Concludes Linder, who since 1998 has been a member of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society: “The overwhelmingly clear principle I have observed in thousands of organizations over the years, is that there is no substitute for talented people…organizations that do an excellent job of holding onto their best and brightest aren’t necessarily those that offer the highest salaries in their market. Rather, they’re the ones that focus intelligently and relentlessly on employee growth, teamwork and culture, and openness and honesty.”
