CURE® Welcomes Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Association as New Member of Advocacy Spotlight Partnership Program
Plainsboro, NJ (PRWEB) September 22, 2015 -- CURE® magazine, the largest consumer publication in the United States focused entirely on cancer, today welcomed ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc., to CURE’s Advocacy Spotlight Partnership program to better educate, inform and support those battling this increasingly diagnosed cancer. September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness month.
Thyroid cancer is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the U.S. Nearly 2 out of 3 cases are found in patients younger than 55 years of age, including about 2 percent in children and teens. In 2015, the American Cancer Society estimates 62,450 new cases of thyroid cancer, albeit with a relatively low rate of 1,950 deaths.
“Together with our newest partner, ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, we can help more patients and their families find both the latest information and emotional support to cope with this disease,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president of Intellisphere Oncology and Healthcare Specialty Group, part of the Plainsboro, N.J.-based Michael J. Hennessy Associates, Inc., family of businesses. “With increasing rates of diagnosis and high rates of survivorship, thyroid cancer deserves attention. We are proud to provide the cutting-edge information and reliable advice patients, families and medical professionals need to make informed choices and live with this disease.”
ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, a nonprofit launched in 1995, is dedicated to providing free medically reviewed educational materials and support about thyroid cancer and treatments to patients and families, communicating with health care professionals to promote better understanding of the disease and supporting research in hopes of a future free of thyroid cancer.
The global incidence of thyroid cancer has steadily increased over the past 50 years, and, as the most common endocrine malignancy, there remains a need for additional treatment options, particularly for patients whose cancer no longer responds to radioactive iodine therapy. Although most patients have a very small risk of dying from thyroid cancer, the risk of recurrence can be as high as 30 percent depending on the specifics of the individual tumor and patient.
“As we dream of cures for thyroid cancer and mourn those who have lost their lives to thyroid cancer, we are excited about this partnership to raise awareness and expand outreach to the increasing number of patients and families coping with this disease,” said Gary Bloom, ThyCa executive director. “The CURE Advocacy Spotlight Partnership will help ensure that no one feels alone as they cope with this disease.”
