Final Days to Support the Tip O’Neill Documentary
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 09, 2013 -- The “Mr. Speaker” documentary is reaching its final stretch on popular crowdfunding site, Kickstarter. Based on John A. Farrell’s bestseller, “Tip O’Neill and the Democratic Century,” the film will tell the story about the life and legacy of the political icon, as well as highlight the difference between the politics of O’Neill’s time compared to politics of today. With less than two days left to go, the creators behind “Mr. Speaker” hope to see a final push in pledges.
Tip O’Neill is the classic underdog story. He was raised as a child of a working class family during the Great Depression, worked briefly as a truck driver, then ended up two heartbeats from the Presidency. Dedicated to advocating for the working people, O’Neill, when it counted, put conscience above politics. From voting to repeal the Loyalty Oath as first term member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1937 to publicly disagreeing with President Lyndon Johnson over the Vietnam War to pushing for the impeachment of President Richard Nixon to his ability to find common ground with President Ronald Reagan, he continuously put his career on the line to fight for what he believed was right.
Unlike politicians of today, O’Neill entered politics to make a difference. Having been elected to the same Congressional seat as John F. Kennedy, O’Neill eventually went on to be Speaker of the House for five terms. Despite the criticism and being dubbed an “old liberal,” O’Neill stayed loyal to the working class and spent 50+ years fighting to improving the lives of blue collar workers, the underprivileged and the unemployed.
He set the standard for what politicians and the government should be, but somehow that has gotten lost over the years. To remind all of politics in its truest form, the documentary, “Mr. Speaker,” will highlight the difference between politics of today compared to the “Golden Age of politics.” The documentary will examine why he was so popular with the American people, Republicans and Democrats alike, as a lesson as to why the nation should expect more from today’s elected officials.
With just 2 days left in its initial Kickstarter campaign, “Mr. Speaker” still needs more backers to reach the $44,000 goal. The funds will go towards the production of the documentary, such as interviews, the script and filming locations.
