Surgeons utilize the VERASENSE Knee Application and VERASENSE Sensors to quantify and verify the proper rotation, alignment and load of the knee implant during total knee replacement surgery. Improper soft tissue balance and alignment has been demonstrated to cause up to 36% of early implant revision surgeries. The VERASENSE Sensor replaces the standard tibial trial spacer currently used during knee replacement surgery. The surgeon inserts the VERASENSE Sensor between the femoral and tibial components of the knee implant and utilizes feedback provided by the sensor to customize implant positioning and balance the soft tissues. VERASENSE is embedded with advanced sensors, accelerometers and microelectronics that quantify joint balance, load and alignment intra-operatively. Once the implant position is finalized, the intelligent instrument is removed and replaced with a permanent implant component.
Until now, surgeons’ decisions about these soft tissue functions have varied based on individual judgment, experience and skill set, due to the lack of quantifiable data. By contrast, the VERASENSE Knee System measures and wirelessly transmits key data to a dynamic graphic display, enabling the surgeons to visualize and quantify joint balance, alignment and load during knee replacement procedures.
