Based on the findings of Mary Meeker's recently published Internet Trends Reports, BearCom Describes Three Ways Two-Way Radios Provide a More Secure Alternative Than Cellular Phones

Organizations that rely primarily on smartphone devices for worker communications may find it beneficial from a security standpoint to use two-way radios instead.

In a recent Internet Trends Report posted online on Business Insider in May 2015, long-time Internet analyst Mary Meeker highlighted the growing role that mobile devices play in corporate security breaches. As a result, BearCom, America's only nationwide dealer and integrator of wireless communications equipment, is encouraging businesses to consider two-way radios as an alternative to smartphones.

“Organizations that rely primarily on smartphone devices for worker communications may find it beneficial from a security standpoint to use two-way radios instead,” commented Hugh Johnston, Purchasing Manager for BearCom. “When simple Push-to-Talk is needed, two-way radios provide reliable voice-to-voice communications and do not provide internet or email gateways as potential access points to critical IT data centers.”

BearCom highlights three key ways that simple-to-operate two-way radios significantly reduce security risks compared to mobile devices such as iPhones and Android smartphones:

  • Confidential company and customer information is not stored on two-way radios, so there is no exposure to stolen data if radios are lost or fall into the wrong hands
  • There are no potential access points to company IT networks (except for radios that use the latest digital applications that access the internet)
  • IT malware cannot breach two-way radios, which prevents intrusion at the device and network levels

Johnston further added that the Motorola Solutions CLP, CLS and RMM models are all viable options to smartphones for reliable Push-to-Talk communication. The CLP and CLS models are lightweight and easy to operate, and ideal for covering smaller geographic areas. The RMM line offers enhanced capabilities, and is more suitable for rugged outdoor use in larger geographic areas. Since none of these radios interface with IT networks, they provide added cyber-security protection.
