Liberty & Justice Launches UNIFORM Kickstarter Campaign On Tuesday, June 2nd
New York, NY (PRWEB) June 02, 2015 -- Africa’s first fair trade certified apparel manufacturer Liberty & Justice will launch its Kickstarter campaign for UNIFORM, a premium T-shirt line that will be distributed worldwide. With each UNIFORM T-shirt purchase, a school uniform will be donated to a child in Liberia who otherwise could not attend school.
L&J CEO and Liberia native, Chid Liberty is putting an innovative twist on the traditional 1 for 1 model. Devastated by the unemployment rate and lack of educational opportunities in West Africa, Chid took the lead to develop UNIFORM. In addition to enabling more children to go to school, UNIFORM also creates jobs for women in West Africa. All UNIFORM products are made at L&J’s fair-trade factory in Liberia, where 98% of employees are working mothers. The L&J workforce receives living wages, free healthcare, savings matching, literacy classes, and 49% equity in the factory. This fashion brand is creating hope in Liberia, a country recently declared Ebola-free. UNIFORM sets up a model in which Liberian women will be making uniforms for Liberian children.
“At L&J, we believe that the path to sustainable development not only gives to the poor, but also empowers the poor to create that path for themselves.” - L&J CEO Chid Liberty
In partnership with the United Nations and Liberia’s Ministry of Education, the UNIFORM campaign has set an initial goal of raising $50,000 – the amount needed to donate approximately 2,000 uniforms to 9 schools.
The UNIFORM product is a statement of social impact, sustainability, and fashion. With a classic style and flattering fit, the T-shirts are available in white, gray and back, and are made from state-of-the-art fabric blends, including organic cotton and recycled beechwood. UNIFORM will offer two styles for women and men – an organic African cotton T-shirt for $28 and a tri-blend T-shirt with recycled beechwood fibers for $48. In addition to their T-shirts, customers will receive a notebook and pencil, as well as a Polaroid photo of the child who received a new school uniform. Recently, UNIFORM has received quite the support from celebrities such as Whitney Port and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Leymah Gbowee.
On Friday May 29th, UNIFORM hosted a pre-launch event with music by DJ Expect from Kenya. The event included drinks, appetizers, product demo and a selfie booth at the legendary Soho House in New York’s Meatpacking District. The UNIFORM team was outfitted in the premium T-shirts. Guests included the Quann Sisters from Urban Bush Babes and Alden Wicker from Eco Cult.
