According to http://www.drugfreeworld.org, young people today are exposed earlier than ever to drugs. Based on a survey by the Centers for Disease Control in 2007, 45% of high school students nationwide drank alcohol and 19.7% smoked pot during a one-month period. Young people use drugs to try and manage their problems in their lives or because of the pressure from their peers. Drug use has serious effect on someone’s life and they can even cause death.

“Anthony and Me” by author Vincenzina Urzia shares the moving memoir of her son Anthony and his struggles and battles with drug addiction. He was her second baby boy. As a normal kid growing up, Anthony attended play group, school, and played sport. Everything was going well for the Urzia family until at the age of 14, Anthony started using marijuana. It slowly progresses into other drugs as well and it went on for about eleven years.

While on drugs, Anthony was not the same person anymore. Drugs changed him. About four years after abusing himself with drugs, he was diagnosed with psychosis and schizophrenia, a mental illness that no mother wants to watch her child go through. Anthony’s death took a heavy toll for a mother like Vincenzina. She is still struggling to accept the fact that her son is gone forever. She could still feel the pain and loss from deep inside her heart.

“Anthony and Me” is a poignant revelation of a grieving mother whose son fall victim to the evils of drug addiction and how she loved him so much up to the very end of his life despite his many shortcomings as a son to her. It reflects the special bond between a son and his mother that remains strong forever. Vincenzina Urzia shares his story with readers in the hope that the young people will learn from Anthony’s mistakes.
