Vycom was chosen by Metaphor LLC to help differentiate their line of commercial outdoor furnishings from others on the market. Vycom Designboard has the low-maintenance and graffit-resistance of HDPE, in rich shades and textures that look like wood and metal.

A huge selling feature of our products manufactured with Designboard is the fact that they don’t require any special cleaners or refurbishing compounds and are graffiti-proof.--Karen Pearlstein, Metaphor’s president and CEO.

Designers and industry consultants George Gehringer and Karen Pearlstein of Metaphor, LLC, has selected Vycom's Designboard™ HDPE to help differentiate their line of attractive commercial outdoor furnishings from others on the market. They develop outdoor planters and furniture that meets the market’s need for durable and low-maintenance furnishings that can be custom sized to fit a commercial property’s scale. They selected Designboard for their products for the beauty of its hammered and brushed metal-look finishes, resistance to graffiti, and durability, with the benefits of HDPE.

“We talked to retailers about the limitations in their existing offerings and were told that most plastic pieces literally looked ‘too plastic,’ and other materials were high-maintenance or tended to break down and not look good over time,” explains Gehringer, creative director of Metaphor, based in Exton, Pennsylvania. “Designboard helped us solve these problems with pieces that look very much like metal or wood, but have all the advantages of HDPE.”

VYCOM'S Designboard offers the rich designer shades and textured metals with the durability and weather resistance of solid HDPE. Available with UV resistance, Designboard has superior scratch resistance and stiffness and will not rust, corrode, rot, delaminate, or splinter.

“A huge selling feature of our products manufactured with Designboard is the fact that they don’t require any special cleaners or refurbishing compounds and are graffiti-proof,” explains Pearlstein, Metaphor’s president and CEO. “Since these are in use in commercial spaces, including busy city street corners, this was a real value-add.”

Metaphor’s Outer Limits collection features modular, all-season containers, tables and benches in three, contemporary hammered textures and colors, as well as an engraved line with a more traditional look. The products are manufactured with no visible fasteners – a process it took Metaphor five years to perfect. The Designboard is supplied by Vycom and the products are all manufactured in Pennsylvania. Metaphor also works with a national distributor based in Pennsylvania, making them what Gehringer calls “truly a domestic, Pennsylvania business.”

While offered in a range of sizes, most of the pieces are built custom. For example, Metaphor recently had an order for a modular unit as large as 160’ wide by 297’ long. Their standard-sized planters sit outside Griffin Apartments on the high-profile corner of Broad and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia, while a cocktail table measuring 47"Lx47"Wx16"H is used inside Redskin Stadium’s Fantasy Football Lounge in downtown Washington, D.C. Metaphor has even custom designed a fountain and a fire pit.

“Designboard gives us so many options that we can get really creative with custom work to meet the commercial market’s needs,” says Pearlstein.
