California Casualty congratulates the five Washington State schools and districts that have been named 2016 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools awardees. They are among 64 districts and schools across the nation this year who achieved the honor.
Bethel School District (Spanaway), Issaquah School District, Gaiser Middle School (Vancouver) Columbia Crest A-STEM Academy (Ashford) and Lakota Middle School (Federal Way) were cited for their exemplary efforts incorporating environmental principles and sustainability programs into their schools and curriculum.
“What I appreciate about these awards is the variety of projects,” said Randy Dorn, Washington superintendent of public instruction. "It shows just how much students and staff care about the environment and sustainability. It also shows me how creative students can be.”
California Casualty CEO Beau Brown remarked what a privilege it is to help promote the actions of schools and school districts that benefit the environment, youth and the community at large. “We congratulate the Green Ribbon Schools awardees for meeting the high standards set by the U.S. Department of Education,” he said.
To achieve the Green Ribbon Schools status, the districts and schools had to meet three key pillars:
1. Reducing environmental impacts and costs
2. Improving the health and wellness of students and staff
3. Providing effective environmental and sustainability education, incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); civic skills and green career pathways
As the Green Ribbon Schools Local Sponsor, California Casualty is providing $1,000 to each Washington awardee to help with expenses traveling to the national honors ceremony in July, held in Washington, D.C.
