Planalytics Canadian Business Weather Impact Report: Coldest January in 7 Years Boosts Winter Purchases
Berwyn, PA (PRWEB) February 05, 2015 -- Planalytics’ monthly Business Weather Impact Report highlights how consumer-focused businesses in Canada were affected by a colder and wetter January. The coldest January since 2009 combined with increased precipitation helped boost winter product sales as shoppers sought out seasonal apparel, snow removal products, and hot beverages.
In comparison to January 2014, the month overall was colder in the East and warmer in central and western markets. Businesses in Winnipeg, for example, saw decreased demand for winter products versus last year. However, businesses in Toronto and Montreal were able to perform well against weaker year-ago comps. Seasonal demand was strongest early in the month due to the coldest start to January in 11 years, driven by the bitter cold in the East. Demand began to slow down mid-month on the arrival of warmer temperatures.
Planalytics’ Weather-Driven Demand (WDD) insights quantify the impact that weather alone has on demand for specific categories compared to the previous year. The following weather-driven demand examples from January illustrate the contrasting weather favorability between eastern, central, and western regions in Canada. Fleece: +8% WDD in Montreal and -12% WDD in Winnipeg. Heaters: -14% WDD in Vancouver and +30% WDD in Halifax. Cough and Cold: +10% WDD in Toronto and +12% WDD in Montreal.
