WellCare Partners With The American Diabetes Association To Fight Diabetes In New York
Tampa, Fla. (PRWEB) October 09, 2013 -- WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG) supported the American Diabetes Association’s Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes® event in New York City on September 28 to raise awareness and funds to help the more than 25 million Americans living with the disease.
WellCare, in conjunction with the WellCare Community Foundation, is a sponsor of Team Red, which provides an opportunity for individual walkers in select cities to join an American Diabetes Association (ADA) walk team in their area. WellCare is supporting five Team Reds in cities across the country, including New York City, with a total contribution of $75,000. WellCare of New York also held fundraisers and formed a walk team comprised of associates, friends and family members. WellCare of New York will continue its support of the ADA in November, which is National Diabetes Month, with health and wellness events.
“WellCare is committed to helping our members lead healthier lives and to supporting the communities in which they live,” said John Burke, interim state president, WellCare of New York. “According to the ADA, almost one in eight adult New Yorkers now has diabetes. We all must do our part to help fight this serious disease.”
“The American Diabetes Association of Greater New York welcomes WellCare to NYC’s Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes and its sponsorship of Team Red participants,” said Kevin Shippy, executive director, American Diabetes Association of Greater New York. “WellCare’s commitment to our mission reinforces its year-long work throughout all five boroughs, which are so dramatically affected by the epidemic of diabetes.”
As part of its efforts to fight diabetes, WellCare identifies members with the disease and performs outreach using a team of registered nurses and health professionals with clinical experience with diabetes. WellCare also provides education and health coaching for members and their caregivers, empowering them to make behavioral changes, self-manage their condition, and ensure the choices they make will improve their health and quality of life.
