WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG) today announced that it has named Gregg MacDonald state president, Florida. He has responsibility for WellCare’s Medicaid and Medicare Advantage businesses across the state and will lead the company’s statewide expansion initiatives. MacDonald has served as the company’s chief operating officer for Florida since May 2007, and served as WellCare’s acting state president for Florida since April 4. He will continue to report to Ken Burdick, WellCare’s president and chief operating officer.
“Gregg was instrumental in WellCare’s successful implementation of the first two phases of Florida’s Managed Medical Assistance (MMA) Medicaid plan. His extensive executive-level and strong operational health care experience, coupled with his deep understanding of the Florida market, will be an asset as we continue to work with our customers to enhance quality and access to care for our members throughout the state,” said Burdick.

MacDonald has more than 28 years of experience serving in various health care executive roles. Before joining WellCare, he was vice president, network management for United Healthcare, which included responsibility for its southeast region government programs and commercial market leadership for central and north Florida. Prior to that, he was vice president, contracting provider services for Cigna and held several leadership positions at Aetna.
As of March 31, 2014, WellCare serves approximately 400,000 Medicaid plan members, 82,000 Florida Healthy Kids members, 84,000 Medicare Advantage plan members and 57,000 Medicare Prescription Drug Plan members in Florida.
