Today in Brooklyn, Wines of South Africa (http://www.wosa.us, WOSA) previews the video series, "From BBQ to Braai." The pilot episode was shot on 11/3 at the "BBQ to Braai" event at Raleigh Studios in L.A.. The "BBQ to Braai" national tour was created by WOSA to promote a better understanding of South African culture through wine, food and music. Annette Badenhorst, US Market Manager for WOSA states: "WOSA established the model of a braai (South African BBQ) integrated with local BBQ cuisine in summer 2013 to introduce Americans, not only to South African wine, but to South African food and culture, in a way they could easily relate to." Since the first braai in upstate NY in July 2013, "BBQ to Braai" has hit Taste Talks in Brooklyn on 9/15, Austin on 10/27 and Hollywood on 11/3. "We have had tremendous success in the 2013 events with a dynamic Chef, creative multi-media artist, and terrific wines. All of our events have been packed with 300+ attendees, all enjoying the wine, food and music. We are excited for 2014!"
In each stop, acclaimed South African Chef Hugo and Xander seek out local chefs, food personalities, farmers and musicians, with the goal of a "cultural" barter between American and South African traditions- replacing the dove and olive tree with a bottle of wine and a "boerewores" roll. The culmination of these exchanges results in a large scale, low-cost, ticketed consumer event featuring South African wine, food from Chef Hugo and entertainment from Xander. All proceeds from each event will benefit a local charity.
For the 2014 series, acclaimed Chef Hugo and Xander will continue to travel across the U.S., hosting 10 braai and wine events in collaboration with locally selected chefs, wine specialists, and musicians. At the same time, they will get to know local produce, recipes, flavors, customs and sounds to create a tapestry of the Americana road-trip: South African style. 2014 destinations will include New Orleans, Santa Fe, Portland, Key West and even Hawaii.
