'WoW MoM' Documentary Covers Warcraft Gaming Community as Cancer Therapy

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 05, 2014 -- In 2010, Terry Bolt was diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET), a rare and often misunderstood form of cancer that was responsible for the death of Steve Jobs. Aiming to bring awareness to her cancer and unique therapy, the 64-year-old, self-described WoW MoM works through her bucket list, which includes attending BlizzCon in full cosplay, self-publishing a young adult sci-fi novel, and performing stand-up comedy with Chris Hardwick of Nerdist Industries.

The documentary project quickly expanded as Bolt discovered others using MMO games to provide a way of coping with hardship, illness or injury. She interviews a father who plays World of Warcraft with his diagnosed son. She covers a tournament thrown in support of a stomach-cancer patient in Denmark.

“Once I started looking into gaming as a way to heal there was too much story there to tell,” says director Andie Bolt. “It’s not just a bunch of dudes in their parent’s basements; it’s grandmas on their ranches, terminal children in their hospital beds, or wives who just lost their husbands.”

Nerdist Industries provided the initial funding to complete the majority of principal photography. In order to finish the post-production phase of the film, Bolt is turning to Kickstarter. “It’s a movie about an online community and I’m opening the film up to be completed by an online community,” she explains. As the project has expanded from a short web piece to a full feature, Bolt and her mother hope to increase awareness about NET tumors while shining a light on the positive effects of the online gaming community.

The film includes appearances by: Chris Hardwick, Michele Morrow, Fortune Feimster, Chloe Dykstra, Greg Fitzsimmons, Clare Grant, Adam Ray, Holly Conrad, Game Developers, Cast of “The Guild,” AALG and more.

Supporters have already rallied around the Kickstarter campaign offering rewards for "WoW MoM" donors, which include featured perks from Clare Grant, J!nx Clothing, and Chris Hardwick.
