Latest A Forever Recovery Blog Post Focuses on Zohydro, the Controversial New FDA Approved Painkiller
Battle Creek, MI (PRWEB) April 29, 2014 -- A Forever Recovery, an open-ended drug and alcohol treatment program that gets clients off to a great start and gives them a solid foundation in recovery they can believe in, is focusing on the controversial new FDA approved painkiller Zohydro ER in its latest blog post.
As the blog post explains, Zohydro is a new narcotic painkiller from pharmaceutical company Zogenix. Designed to help individuals suffering from severe chronic pain, each Zohydro ER capsule has five times the hydrocodone of OxyContin.
“Notably, the FDA’s own advisory committee voted by a margin of 12 to 1 to reject the drug due to its high concentration of hydrocodone,” commented A Forever Recovery’s CEO Per Wickstrom. “However, that recommendation was overridden, and the drug was introduced to the market in March 2014 – despite protests from medical experts such as Dr. Andrew Kolodny, the President of the advocacy group Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing, who said that Zohydro will kill people as soon as it’s released.”
Medical and drug addiction experts are also concerned about how the drug will be used. Although it’s designed to be released slowly into the body over a period of 12 hours, there’s widespread belief that individuals will “crush” the pills so that the dose is released all at once – which increases the likelihood of an overdose and in some extreme cases, death.
Added Per Wickstrom: “With so many painkillers on the market, we have to ask why we need add another one – and especially one as potent as Zohydro. We need to do more research to determine whether the potential benefit of legitimate use is outweighed by the consequences and costs of illegal use.”
