Latest A Forever Recovery Blog Post Explores the Link Between Addiction and Depression
Battle Creek, MI (PRWEB) September 17, 2014 -- In its latest blog post, A Forever Recovery, an open-ended drug and alcohol treatment program that gets clients off to a great start and gives them a solid foundation in recovery they can believe in, is exploring the dangerous link between addiction and depression.
“About 20% of Americans who are afflicted with depression are also addicted to alcohol, drugs or both,” commented A Forever Recovery’s CEO Per Wickstrom. “Unfortunately, these two very serious ailments are also linked in another insidious way: they are both widely misunderstood – even by people who are afflicted by them – and as a result many people each year put their health and lives at risk because they don’t have access to the information, support and programs they need. Hopefully, our blog post will raise some awareness and inspire people to ask questions – rather than assume answers.”
According to the A Forever Recovery blog post, individuals suffering from depression, addiction or both should keep the following in mind:
- Never self-medicate to try and treat depression or addiction – even if it’s with seemingly harmless remedies such as those found on drug store shelves or health food stores. Individuals should speak to their doctor as soon as possible and follow his or her advice.
- Many drugs – including prescription drugs – trigger depression-like side effects. Again, individuals should speak with their doctor about these symptoms to determine whether a different medication and/or different dosage is warranted.
- Going “cold turkey” to tackle a drug addiction may seem courageous, and in fact it may be what some well-meaning friends and family members advise. However, it is categorically not advisable, since withdrawal can trigger depression along with many other dangerous side effects.
Added Per Wickstrom: “A holistic rehab program can help individuals address the root cause of their depression or addiction – or both – and empower them to build a strong, sober life!”
