A Battle for the Throne Brings an Age-Old Legacy to Light in Captivating New Fantasy Novel
Ancient artifacts possessed by black magic threaten to lead a kingdom to ruin unless a young mercenary can find the only weapon powerful enough to defeat them in M. A. Frost's "The Freelancers"
KAJANG, Malaysia, Aug. 16, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Author M. A. Frost has released "The Freelancers: The Black Shield and the Red Fortune," an absorbing and intricate high fantasy novel in which warring factions vie for power and control. Cunning mercenaries of varying allegiances and wizards practicing forbidden sorcery provide aid to each side; however, their strength and skill are compromised by the existence of ancient magical swords, which only reveal themselves to wielders of their choosing.
Years after the Golden Knight brandished the Sword of Truth to end the reign of black magic and restore freedom to the land of Mattermaph, peace is threatened once more. Two young freelancer mercenaries, Azalar, an excellent swordsman, and Ferend, a talented archer, are summoned to the Kingdom of Selenor. There, they are instructed by King Rowd to put an end to the brewing civil war in a neighboring kingdom, Redhaze, in support of its new ruler, Lord Gausun. While Gausun possesses the most support among the people, other mercenary groups are weary of his intentions and form in opposition to his leadership.
Azalar and Ferend begin training Selenor's military but soon encounter unexpected interference as old mercenary ties resurface and raise questions around Gausun's legitimacy. The stakes are further heightened when the magical swords begin appearing across Mattermaph and possessing those who wield them to commit brutal acts. Aided by the king's daughter, Princess Maiya, and her servant, Lenne, the two men must discover the truth behind Gausun's plans and unravel the Golden Knight's legacy while protecting Selenor from outside forces, both military and black magic.
A long-time enthusiast of the fantasy genre, Frost wrote "The Freelancers" to explore how the existence of magic might influence an ancient society. Through immersive storytelling and alternating points of view, his book draws readers into the world and allows them to see the conflicts through the perspectives of characters from different social classes, including those on the fringes of society.
"With adventures as engaging and strategized as those encountered in Magic: The Gathering, this book will appeal to both veterans of and newcomers to the fantasy genre," wrote Nicole Yurcaba, The US Review of Books."
"If you are a fan of similar fantasy series like Game of Thrones and The Wheel of Time, you will enjoy The Freelancers . . . I foresee this book turning into a long running series so get in at the start so you can grow with these fantastic characters," wrote Arthur Thares, Pacific Book Review.
