ABILENE, Texas, Jan. 31, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Shooter Detection Systems (SDS), the leading gunshot detection solutions provider to the transportation industry, today announced that Abilene Regional Airport (ABI), owned and operated by the City of Abilene, selected the Guardian Indoor Active Shooter Detection System for the airport's terminal building to protect passengers and staff against the active shooter threat. The gunshot detection system was funded at ninety percent of the total cost of the project by a Federal grant aimed at strengthening the safety and efficiency of America's airports.
Guardian is a system of dual-mode sensors that detect acoustic gunshot signatures and the visual flash from the discharge of a weapon combined with advanced software, providing a capability that promptly reports shooting incidents to first responders and building occupants. Although Guardian is installed in other U.S. airports and in Texas schools and businesses, ABI represents the first in the state to deploy the technology in a Texas airport. "We are extremely pleased to welcome Abilene Regional Airport to our growing list of airport customers," said Christian Connors, Chief Executive Officer for SDS. "We are also grateful to the FAA for their foresight, which is giving airports of all sizes the opportunity to choose advanced technologies that bring their existing security systems to the next level so they can fully address modern-day threats."
Don Green, ABI's Director of Transportation Services, proposed the Guardian System to the Abilene City Council for its zero false alert history, extended use in other airports and the core technology's success on the battlefield during the Gulf War. "This system knows the difference between a gunshot and the sound of a bag drop or mechanical noise in the airport, which is extremely important," said Green. "Confirming that a gunshot event has occurred and getting that alert in sub-one second will allow our first responders to act fast."
The system will be installed by Irving, Texas' Walker Engineering, an Authorized Dealer for Shooter Detection Systems. Upon completion the airport plans on integrating shot alerts with other security systems to aid in safe evacuation in a shooting event.
