September 12, 2016 opinion piece in USA Today newspaper discusses Adam Bergman’s position on Mr. Kaepernick not standing for national anthem

After nineteen years living in the United States, the greatest country in the world, I finally became a United States citizen on Friday August 26, 2016. Other then my wedding and the birth of my children, this was the happiest day of my life

On September 12, 2016, The USA Today, published an opinion piece by Adam Bergman, titled, “New U.S. citizen to Kaepernick: Stand up.” The opinion piece described how Mr. Adam Bergman, a recent U.S. citizen, felt about Mr. Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, electing to not stand for the playing of the national anthem in a preseason game. “After nineteen years living in the United States, the greatest country in the world, I finally became a United States citizen on Friday August 26, 2016. Other then my wedding and the birth of my children, this was the happiest day of my life,” stated, Mr. Bergman.

According to Mr. Bergman, the issue is not whether Mr. Kaepernick has a constitutional right to sit for the playing of the national anthem. The issue is that his protest has no direct link to the perceived wrong. The United States does not stand for racism and the government does not have a policy of promoting social inequality. Directing his protest at the flag and everything this great country stands for is unfitting.
