Every senior citizen in the United States has a goal to age in place. With the appropriate mobility furnishings and diligence to home safety and falls prevention, that goal can be reached for most of our seniors citizens.
Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) May 28, 2014
Older Americans Month is sponsored each May by the U.S. Administration for Community Living. This year’s theme is "Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow." As this year’s awareness campaign comes to a close the Easy Rest Adjustable Bed Company is pleased to announce the creation of an informational page on their website with 12 important safety tips to prevent falls in the bedroom. Seniors, caregivers and their families can review the list and make necessary adjustments to the bedroom for better safety and easier mobility.
Safety topics addressed in the list include bedroom furnishings, lighting and appropriate bed height, among others. The complete list can be seen on the Easy Rest Adjustable Bed website or by clicking here.
According to the National Council on Aging, one in three community-dwelling persons over the age of 65 falls each year, and this number increases to one in two by the age of 80. Fall-related injuries are often serious enough to result in hospitalization and even premature death; moreover, persons who fall often face significant declines in mobility and independence.
The Centers for Disease Control Falls Among Older Adults Page outlines the health risks and costs associated with falls in the senior population.
- One out of three adults age 65 and older falls each year, but less than half talk to their healthcare providers about it.
- Among older adults (those 65 or older), falls are the leading cause of injury death. They are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.
- In 2010, 2.3 million nonfatal fall injuries among older adults were treated in emergency departments and more than 662,000 of these patients were hospitalized.
- In 2010, the direct medical costs of falls, adjusted for inflation, was $30.0 billion.
“Every senior citizen in the United States has a goal to age in place,” stated Ann Mowrey, Public Relations Director for the Easy Rest Adjustable Bed brand. “With the appropriate mobility furnishings and diligence to home safety and falls prevention, that goal can be reached for most of our seniors citizens.”
