The France Foundation is teaming up with the American Society of Hematology to offer an online module and video on β-thalassemia. “All Grown Up: Ensuring Effective Care Transitions in Beta Thalassemia” is designed to educate hematologists, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare providers who manage patients with β-thalassemia.

New and emerging therapies have the potential to alter the futures of patients with β-thalassemia drastically, yet guidelines are dated and clinicians are unlikely to be conversant with novel and emerging therapies. Patients with Transfusion-Dependent β-Thalassemia (TDT) also have an impaired quality of life (QOL) associated with the disease and its treatment. Patients transitioning from pediatric to adult care for β-thalassemia are particularly vulnerable given a variety of concomitantly shifting variables, such as potential changes in location or oversight of care, change or adjustment in care needs (i.e., different medications or dosages), or change in eligibility for novel therapies.

Clinicians treating patients with β-thalassemia who are transitioning from pediatric to adult care must be up to date with the challenges specific to this time and how to manage them so these patients can receive seamless care and the best possible outcomes.

This activity features an hour-long video of panels and informational sessions from top doctors in the US. Ashutosh Lal, MD, Siobán Keel, MD, Farzana Sayani, MD, Jennifer Yu, MD, Janice Beatty, RN, and Farzana Sayani, MD, make up the faculty for the module.

Upon successful completion of the β-thalassemia module, participants will be able to:

  • Review therapeutic options and their associated AEs for management of β-thalassemia across the lifestyle
  • Recognize patient and provider-level barriers to transition in care for β-thalassemia
  • Identify key strategies to support β-thalassemia patients moving from pediatric to adult care
  • Better understand new and emerging therapies for patients with β-thalassemia
