Allegheny Health Network Names Srinivas Murali, MD, FACC, System Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine
PITTSBURGH (PRWEB) August 15, 2019 -- Srinivas Murali, MD, FACC, a nationally-recognized cardiologist and medical director of Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Cardiovascular Institute, has been named Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine for AHN.
In this new role, Dr. Murali will lead a team of 80 employed physicians, 40 affiliated physicians and 23 fellows, ensuring the provision of exceptional cardiovascular medicine at AHN’s hospitals and outpatient centers. He will also guide AHN’s ongoing collaborations with independent cardiology groups to help promote the same outstanding level of care across the region’s independent community hospitals.

As the appointed leader of AGH’s newly-formed Cardiovascular Institute when he arrived in 2006, Dr. Murali has spent the ensuing years successfully building and strengthening AHN’s programs for advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, pulmonary hypertension, minimally invasive and robotically assisted open heart procedures, and mitral valve disease, among others diseases of the heart and vascular system.
AGH’s and AHN’s cardiovascular program has earned national recognition for its leading expertise and outcomes in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. AHN is the highest-rated health system in Western Pennsylvania for patient safety in heart failure treatment, and several AHN hospitals have earned top spots nationally for cardiovascular care, according to the latest CareChex awards.
Forbes and Jefferson hospital are in the top 10 percent nationally for medical excellence of heart failure treatment and major cardiac surgery, respectively, according to CareChex. In addition, AGH is the top performing heart transplant program in the market and a nationally-recognized leader in the field with the sixth best three-year survival rates, out of more than 100 adult heart transplant programs across the country, according to the latest Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) data.

Dr. Murali is currently a professor of medicine at both Drexel University College of Medicine and the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.
Throughout his career, Dr. Murali has served on leadership committees for a number of regional and national cardiology organizations, including a three-year term as the American College of Cardiology governor for western Pennsylvania and the president of the state chapter, and a three-year term as President of the local affiliate of the American Heart Association (AHA).
He serves as a fellow with the American College of Physicians and is a longstanding member of the AHA, the Heart Failure Society of America, and International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, among dozens of other state, national and international professional affiliations.
Dr. Murali received his medical degree from the University of Madras’ Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, followed by an internal medicine residency, and cardiovascular disease fellowship at the Jewish Hospital and Medical Center in New York, and fellowship in advanced heart failure and heart transplantation at UPMC.
